Early Start
Early College is a program for Suttons Bay High School students to begin their college study while completing their high school graduation requirements. Beginning in their freshman year, students who are interested in the program are encouraged to take college readiness courses. To be eligible for the program, students must earn qualifying scores on the COMPASS Test and complete an application packet.
This program is designed and delivered through a collaborative partnership with Northwestern Michigan College that provides an accelerated learning opportunity reducing time and expenses of education beyond high school. Students benefit from a curriculum that enables them to earn their high school diploma and attend a 13th year of school after graduation to earn an Associate’s Degree with no cost to them for tuition and fees.
Early Support
Mature, highly motivated students who are ready for the challenges of college coursework leading to high demand careers are eligible.
Early College students attend high school classes at Suttons Bay schools for the General Studies Certificate and move to the Northwestern Michigan College campus for career-focused classes in the fifth year. Students engage in an exciting curriculum taught by both high school and college instructors that will move them ahead of a traditional schedule.
Early Success
Students may earn up to the 62 college credits required for their Associate in Science and Arts degree. These credits are transferrable to a four year college program. They have the option to begin work immediately in their chosen field, or continue with their education a year ahead of their peers toward a Bachelor’s degree.
Program participants and parents will benefit from significant savings in college expenses. Students will excel in a challenging academic environment providing the opportunity to be on the fast pace towards their career goals.
